The main tasks of the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) in ESTiMatE project include:
the generation of experimental datasets in a counter flow diffusion flame in turbulent conditions and atmospheric pressure for the study of turbulence/chemistry interactions and CFD validation,
the generation of experimental datasets in a swirl stabilized combustor with a liquid fuel injection nozzle, to serve for validation of the turbulent combustion models, but also for the primary breakup model.
Concerning hardware, TU Berlin will design and develop a setup where turbulent atmospheric counter flow flames will be investigated. TU Berlin will also design and develop a swirl-stabilized combustor with a liquid fuel injection nozzle, capable to operate over a broad range of equivalence ratios including under-stoichiometric and over-stoichiometric operation in the primary reaction zone.
TU Berlin will employ experimental fluid mechanics techniques to assess the investigated combustion schemes. Particularly, Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA), Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), Quasielastic light scattering (QLS) and OH* chemiluminscence measurements will be applied to quantify the velocity- and temperature field as well as the flame location respectively. OH and CH2O Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) imaging will be employed for species concentration measurements and Laser-induced incandescence (LII) for soot measurements.
