The Combustion Technology Division is one of the three divisions of the Engler-Bunte-Institute (EBI-vbt), which is one of the largest institutes at KIT. Research and teaching at KIT(EBI-vbt) covers a wide range of topics related to combustion processes and reacting flows. Most important research areas include clean combustion, alternatives to the use of fossil fuels, fundamental combustion processes, combustion generated particles, spray combustion, chemical kinetics in combustion devices and thermoacoustics. KIT(EBI-vbt) uses state-of-the-art equipment and methodologies, both experimental and numerical, in order to accomplish the research objectives.
Within the scope of ESTiMatE, KIT(EBI-vbt) will work on the experimental characterisation of laminar counterflow flames of ethylene and of kerosene-surrogates, under higher pressures (up to 10 bar). The aim is to generate datasets of different flame characteristics (e.g. temperatures, species concentrations, soot volume fractions etc.) under well-defined experimental conditions. This data will serve for the validation of kerosene kinetic-mechanisms, and of soot formation/oxidation models that are being developed within ESTiMatE.
